He started playing soccer at Kamoi SC when he was in the first grade of elementary school. After attending a public school in Kanagawa Prefecture and Kanagawa University, he joined Van Foret Kofu. His professional debut was in March 2015. After only one year, he moved to Kashiwa Reysol in 2016. The following year, he won the J-League Outstanding Player Award in 2017 and was also selected for the Japanese national team for the first time.In February 2019, he moved to Belgian powerhouse KRC Henk. In September 2019, he made his UEFA Champions League debut, scoring a goal in the domestic cup final in the 20-21 season to lead the club to the championship.
In the 21-22 season, he won the assists title and the goal of the year award.
His performance earned him a transfer to Stade de Reims, where he scored his first goal on August 28.
He also contributed to Japan's qualification for the World Cup, scoring a goal in four consecutive games, tied for the most in the history of World Cup qualifiers. He is expected to play an active role as an ace.
